WASH IN SCHOOLS

By improving the WASH situation in schools in Maputo, we are creating the conditions for children to learn in a safe environment.

CURRENT SITUATION

Lack of infrastructure

In many school areas in Maputo there are either no intact sanitary facilities or they are in a desolate state. Therefore, many students avoid them, which leads to public defecation or children not going to school at all. In addition, there is often no infrastructure to wash hands and thus prevent the spread of diseases.

Girls of menstruating age are particularly affected

A lack of or inadequate sanitation infrastructure particularly affects girls of menstruating age. Many girls therefore stay away from school during menstruation, which increases the inequality of opportunity.

Globally, over 443 million school days are lost each year due to waterborne diseases.

40 % of diseases due to lack of access to sanitation and drinking water are transmitted in schools.

Less than 30 % of all schools have gender-separated toilets.

TOILETS

Lack of access to sanitation has a major impact on school life. Toilets are overloaded, students defecate outside and pathogens spread faster.

GENDER

Girls and women are particularly affected by the lack of sanitary facilities. Sanitary products for menstruation are practically non-existent. Less than a third of schools offer gender-separated toilet facilities, which increases the risk of harassment or sexual assault. Many young women therefore stay away from school, which further reinforces the inequality of opportunity.

GOALS

To improve the WASH situation in schools, we pursue three goals:

1

to provide students with an adequate learning environment with hygienic conditions

2

reduce gender inequality of opportunity

3

to effectively counter the spread of waterborne diseases
