Zambia is dealing with a severe Cholera outbreak, as we reported in our last news post. In the meantime, the WATER FOR WATER (WfW) Zambia WASH Systems team has been working directly with the Ministry of Education in Zambia through the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) in Mazabuka in preparation for schools to reopen on Monday, 12 February. The DEBS office requested that WfW support their hygiene and sanitation efforts amidst the cholera outbreak that Zambia has been experiencing since October 2023. Our team visited over ten schools and has already been able to implement concrete measures in six schools in the district, supporting over 10,000 schoolchildren.
IMPLEMENTED MEASURES
The St. Columbus Primary & Secondary School in Mazabuka District initially used a hand pump. We mechanised the system and installed a chlorinator.

ONGOING MEASURES
We have one more ongoing intervention at Ndeke Primary and Secondary School, where we will install an online chlorinator and supply chlorine cartridges for the 2,500 learners. Plus, we have an ongoing WASH in schools project at Kaleya West Primary and Secondary School (1,800 learners) in partnership with Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWSC).
We are currently working in the Southern Province of Zambia following the signing of an MOU with the Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWSC) last June. Three projects are underway in Mazabuka, Pemba and Batoka, where significant progress has been made since December 2023 to improve access to water for the communities living in these growth centres.
