We are water.
We are water. We are made up of around 70 per cent of it – and the water within us is the same water that our ancestors drank, that flowed through the bodies of dinosaurs, and that has been circulating in the same cycles for billions of years. For there has always been the same amount of water on our planet: exactly 1,386,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres. No more, no less.
This water connects us – to nature, to all living beings, to people on the other side of the world. It connects space and time by ceaselessly moving on in the most diverse forms. And thus keeps life in motion. It makes us part of something greater.
Today, on World Water Day, we pause to reflect. We look at what is. At the beauty of these ancient water cycles. And at the same time, at the reality that clean water and safe access to it are still not a daily reality for billions of people around the world.
That is why we work every day to protect and ensure fair access to clean, natural water – in Switzerland, in Zambia and in Mozambique. Because water is not a privilege. It is the foundation of everything.

Water affects us all – but not in the same way.
This year’s World Water Day focused on the theme of water and gender. For whilst water connects us all, it does not affect everyone equally. Worldwide, women and girls spend 250 million hours a day fetching water – three times more than men and boys. Over a billion women have no access to clean drinking water. And women are still massively under-represented in the water sector and in decision-making processes – even though they bear the brunt of the burden.
Water is a human right. But as long as women and girls cannot decide, plan and shape water issues on an equal footing, this right remains incomplete.
We want to help bring about change. Together with women from our projects, in our partnerships and within our team.
