SPRING WATER REPLACES BOTTLED WATER IN ZAMBIAN HOTELS
Zambia produces an estimated 80,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year, of which only ten percent is disposed of properly. The rest pollutes the environment with around 2,400 tonnes entering vital ecosystems every year.
In September 2024, we at WfW celebrated a milestone with the launch of the GREEN HOSPITALITY service in Zambia. Seven HOSPITALITY partners have already joined the programme, including renowned properties such as Chaminuka Luxury Lodge and The Nkosi Livingstone Lodge and Spa.
Together with the first eight partners, we are establishing a new nationwide model that combines local social value creation and environmental protection: We support lodges, hotels, restaurants and cafés from analysing their water treatment to installing filter systems and integrating them into everyday operations. With reusable WfW glass bottles and local, high-quality filtered spring water, partners benefit from new sources of income, guests benefit from natural water and the environment benefits from a reduction in plastic - one WfW glass bottle replaces at least 2,000 PET bottles in its life cycle.
But this self-reinforcing impact loop does not end there: part of the income from water sales flows back to WfW. This in turn strengthens the local WfW team and makes our activities in Zambia increasingly self-sustaining. Every bottle consumed reinforces this positive cycle - a pioneering approach that is breaking new ground in Zambia.
